70s Style Geppy-X Remaster Announced
Released exclusively in Japan in 1999, the 70s-style Geppy-X was an extraordinary project for its time. Its four-disc format, thousands of hand-drawn animation frames, and its claim to offer a playable super-robot anime made it a cult classic. Now, Geppy-X Remaster, by Bliss Brain and Implicit Conversions, is set to launch on July 16th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC.
Geppy-X Remaster Preserves the Classic Spirit
The most striking aspect of the production is that it promises more than just a simple resolution increase. It’s stated that the original Betacam master recordings have been re-digitized and the animations restored to 24 frames per second. This creates not just a visual enhancement, but an archival remake feel. The goal is to preserve the anime aesthetic of that era while offering modern clarity.
In terms of gameplay, the classic horizontal scrolling shooter structure remains unchanged. Players strategize by instantly switching between three different forms. Switching between balanced firepower, high speed, or risky but devastating melee combat options will be crucial, especially in boss battles. The mid-story Geppy-XX transformation also returns as a typical 70s super robot breakout moment.
The difficulty level remains faithful to the original structure, while modern conveniences have been added. Options such as rewind, rapid fire, quick save, and CRT filter appeal to both nostalgia seekers and new players. This approach can be interpreted as an effort to increase accessibility without compromising the classic experience.
Geppy-X Remaster represents a archival return for retro enthusiasts. It can also be considered an important step in preserving cult classics by re-releasing a game that never left Japan on a global scale.
