A Bendable and Squeezeable PlayStation Controller is Coming

PlayStation had already taken a significant step forward in haptic feedback, particularly with the DualSense controller. However, it seems Sony aims to take this experience even further. Newly revealed patent details have brought back the idea of a controller that goes beyond the classic button structure and can physically change shape.

The Idea of a Bendable Controller for PlayStation Expands

According to leaked patent images, this new controller developed for PlayStation has a structure that can be squeezed, bent, and even shaped in different ways. This idea, previously tested with spherical modules, is now presented with a more advanced design. The new model features a structure consisting of 25 independent haptic feedback points.

Each of these points can be moved independently. Players can give different commands in-game by squeezing, bending, or pulling these surfaces. This aims to offer a more physical interaction, going beyond the classic button-pressing logic. One example given in the patent includes quite different use cases, such as creating a volcano in the game world by pulling a surface and then detonating it by bending it.

On the technical side, each tactile point has its own vibration feedback. This aims to provide a much more detailed sensation to the player. For example, effects such as an explosion, earthquake, or weapon recoil can be felt directly through the controller. This approach is positioned as a more advanced version of the current DualSense experience.

Of course, it’s important to remember that such patents don’t always turn into a real product. Sony has worked on similar experimental ideas before, but most of them didn’t make it to market. Nevertheless, the reappearance of this concept on the PlayStation side clearly shows that the company continues to explore different avenues in controller design.
