Christopher Nolan has Revived Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Despite being released years ago, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has experienced a resurgence in player interest. The resurgence of the game, which centers on an ancient Greek theme, is thought to be influenced by Christopher Nolan’s new film, which also draws from the same mythological sources. The data shows that the interest in the film quickly translates to the gaming world.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Nearly Doubles Player Count
According to data shared by Alinea Analytics, within 10 days of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey’s theatrical release on July 17th, the number of active Assassin’s Creed Odyssey players increased from approximately 122,000 to 233,000. This represents a 90% increase in engagement across all platforms, reaching approximately 1.8 times the pre-film level in July.
The biggest part of the increase occurred on consoles. Daily active players on PlayStation increased by 94% to 114,000, while Xbox saw a 134% growth, reaching 84,000 users. It’s noted that only 26% of new players came through Steam. This suggests that the game’s presence in PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass libraries facilitated its return.
The film’s impact was also reflected in sales, but the real surge was seen in direct player engagement. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is reported to have sold approximately 400,000 copies since the beginning of the year. Despite this, the film seems to have driven back existing users and encouraged new subscribers to try the long adventure, rather than driving millions to new purchases.
Given Ubisoft’s commercial success with Black Flag Resynced, this increase could pave the way for a similar remaster project for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. No such announcement has come from the company yet, but current data shows just how strong the brand still is. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has become one of the most talked-about games in the series again after eight years, thanks to Christopher Nolan’s film.
