EA Always Preferred Mass Effect
BioWare’s former head writer David Gaider made some remarkable statements about how EA prioritizes the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series. In a post on his personal blog, Gaider stated that the Dragon Age series faced the risk of cancellation after every game and that the reason for this was the commercial success of Mass Effect. The writer, who stated that EA never saw Dragon Age as a safe investment, said that Mass Effect always progressed with more resources and support.
When Mass Effect Brought Success, Dragon Age Was Ignored
David Gaider stated that cancellation rumors have been on the agenda after every new game since the release of Dragon Age: Origins in 2009. He said that there was great uncertainty within the team, especially after Dragon Age II, and that the managers’ faith in the project was shaken. According to Gaider, the efforts of the Dragon Age team were constantly ignored and the excitement about the project was always limited.
In contrast, the Mass Effect series has become a “safe haven” in EA’s eyes, especially after the success of Mass Effect 2. Gaider stated that the Mass Effect team worked with more staff, a larger marketing budget, and broader support. He stated that Dragon Age was deprived of these opportunities. While the fate of the project was uncertain even for Dragon Age: Inquisition, new projects had already begun on the Mass Effect front.
Gaider emphasized that the Dragon Age series survived thanks to the strong support of its fans. He said that if it were not for the loyalty of the series’ fan base, it would have been impossible for three games to have been released so far. In addition, the lack of official information about the development process of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf increases players’ concerns. Gaider’s statements have brought this situation back to the agenda.
There has been no official response from BioWare on the subject. However, David Gaider’s contributions to the series and his closeness to the company’s internal dynamics make his statements an important source. The fact that Dragon Age has been constantly in the background with the rise of Mass Effect continues to create debate among RPG enthusiasts. It is eagerly awaited to see what kind of response Dreadwolf will receive in the coming period.
