God of War Laufey Will be Released on Physical Disc

One of the most anticipated aspects of God of War Laufey has been clarified. Santa Monica Studio has officially confirmed that the new game, currently in development, will have a physical disc version. Coming amidst intensified discussions about PlayStation potentially ending physical game production, this announcement has been positively received by players who collect physical copies.

God of War Laufey to be Released on Physical Disc

While announcing the God of War Laufey panel to be held at San Diego Comic-Con, Santa Monica Studio also provided information about the physical version of the game. While numerous questions were expected regarding the future of physical copies following the announcement, the studio explicitly stated that God of War Laufey will be released on disc format. This confirms that the game will not be available exclusively through the digital store.

The game’s release date has not yet been announced. However, the confirmation of a physical disc version has led to speculation that God of War Laufey may be released before the end of new disc production for PlayStation. It is suggested that Sony will cease producing new physical game discs from January 2028 onwards. While it’s stated that reprints of previously released PS5 games may continue, new titles will not be offered on disc.

The announced Comic-Con panel will take place on July 24, 2026. Some cast members will participate, along with Game Director Ariel Lawrence. The panel will be moderated by Cory Barlog, a key figure in Santa Monica Studio’s creative management. New details regarding the game’s story, gameplay, or release date are expected to be shared during the event, but no official promises have been made yet.

The physical release announcement has also led to speculation that God of War Laufey may be one of the last games released on disc by Santa Monica Studio. It’s unknown whether the PlayStation 6 will support PS5 discs or offer an optional disc drive. While Microsoft is rumored to be testing a method of digitally licensing physical Xbox games, Sony doesn’t seem to have a similar system in place. Therefore, the physical edition of God of War Laufey could hold special significance for collectors.
