Images of ZeniMax’s Canceled Project Blackbird Have Emerged
While canceled projects in the gaming world often leave only questions unanswered, occasionally concrete traces of these productions emerge. Most recently, new footage has leaked from ZeniMax’s long-secret Project Blackbird, which was canceled last year. This footage more clearly reveals the project’s stage and why it attracted attention.
Why Was Project Blackbird Canceled?
The leaked footage, approximately two minutes long, shows in-game scenes from Project Blackbird, developed by ZeniMax Online Studios using Unreal Engine 4. It has been confirmed that the footage was used within the studio specifically for lighting and technical presentation purposes. This reveals that the project was not just in the idea stage but had entered a serious production process.
Project Blackbird was cancelled by Microsoft in July 2025. This decision was part of a series of widespread layoffs and project cancellations carried out by Microsoft at the same time. However, the company has not shared an official and clear explanation for why the project was shelved.
According to sources, Project Blackbird was targeting a 2028 release date and received very positive feedback in a presentation to Microsoft Gaming executives just months before its cancellation. It’s even stated that the project’s technical presentation and atmosphere impressed senior executives. Despite this, the cancellation decision was met with surprise in the gaming world.
The project’s halt wasn’t limited to the cancellation of just one game. Approximately 300 developers were laid off, and studio head Matt Firor also resigned. These newly emerged images bring Project Blackbird’s potential back into the spotlight, reigniting discussions about the reasons behind its cancellation.
