Review on “The Success of the Last Generation Consoles”

When evaluating the last generation consoles, it’s important to define what makes them “successful”. If we look at the data and calculate that PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have improved and will continue to improve since their release, it is difficult to say that these consoles are known as a complete failure.

The Success of Last Generation Consoles

In terms of sales figures, both the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles had very positive launches. Despite the supply chain issues during the pandemic, these consoles attracted a lot of attention and many places experienced stock problems.

In terms of technological innovation, last generation consoles brought many innovations. Especially the use of SSD, graphical advances such as ray tracing and fast loading times received positive feedback from players.

When it comes to game libraries, both Xbox and PlayStation got off to a strong start. Xbox’s Game Pass service attracted attention by offering players a wide range of games. However, some gamers were disappointed when it was announced that some of the games announced for the new consoles would be ported to older generation consoles.

The recent announcement of some games to the old generation consoles caused comments that the new generation consoles could not fully meet the expectations. Especially “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor” was first announced only for the new generation consoles and then it was announced that it would also come to the old generation consoles, which disappointed some gamers.

I remember the excitement we experienced in the previous generation. When the PlayStation 4 first arrived, my hands were shaking even as I unboxed it. When we fired up the PS4’s first game, Knack, I couldn’t help but think about how powerful a device we were dealing with and how much fun we were going to have with what it had to offer. I felt the same way when I tried out Ryse: Son of Rome, and as someone who loves Crytek, I felt lucky to have a game console that met my expectations.

If you ask why I’m telling you this, I have to say that I don’t feel the same way about the last generation of game consoles. Of course, the pandemic has had a huge impact, but I still can’t say that I’ve seen a production that would excite me so much in this time that has passed.

Of course, as with any new technology, these consoles have had their problems. Supply issues, software bugs and pricing have all been criticized. But in general, we can say that the last generation consoles have been accepted positively.

On social media platforms such as Twitter, there are criticisms that the new generation consoles have not fully met expectations. Especially the lack of utilization of new features despite the increase in game prices drew the reaction of many gamers.

Another criticism is the limited number of games that will fully utilize the potential of the new generation consoles. However, the games that will be released exclusively for PS5 in the upcoming period have the potential to show the true value of the next generation consoles.

In conclusion, it’s hard to say that the new generation consoles have been labeled as a general failure, but it’s also true that they haven’t fully met gamers’ expectations. The fact that technology is a constantly evolving field causes gamers to keep their expectations high. Of course, it is important to remember that these expectations may not always be met.

Video games have been my passion for as long as I can remember. I have been writing and managing in the game industry for more than 30 years. I've been playing Diablo 2 nonstop since it first came out.
