Mahershala Ali Confirmed his Departure from Marvel’s Blade Project

Despite being announced with great anticipation in 2019, Blade has yet to make it to the big screen in the years since. Constantly delayed due to changes in director and screenwriter, the Marvel film has finally received a very clear statement from its lead actor. Mahershala Ali said he’s put the project behind him and now wants to focus on original productions in his career.

Why Did Mahershala Ali Put the Blade Project Behind?

In his latest interview, Mahershala Ali confirmed that Blade will not be made with him. The Oscar-winning actor stated that if Marvel Studios had truly wanted to make the film, it would have already happened. Saying that in his nearly 30-year career he has learned to accept that some projects are not right for him, Ali stated that Blade is now among those productions.

The actor recalled signing a contract to appear in the film and undergoing combat training for over a year. Despite this, he said he stopped waiting after Marvel didn’t move forward with the project. Ali also emphasized that he wants to be remembered for original productions that can leave a different impact on audiences, rather than remakes.

During Blade’s long development process, there were many changes in screenwriters and directors. Bassam Tariq, one of the project’s former directors, also left and went on to create a new film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. Ali explained that he was able to use the skills he learned for Blade in this film, and thus felt somewhat compensated creatively.

Mahershala Ali’s only contribution to Blade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains a brief voice performance in the post-credits scene of Eternals. The actor also made it clear that he wants any questions about the project to be directed to Marvel Studios. A new Blade film could be developed again with another actor, but Ali’s words indicate that the current version, which has been planned for years, is now completely finished.
