Marathon Game Director Joseph Ziegler has left Bungie
Joseph Ziegler, who led the development of Marathon, announced his departure from Bungie. This departure, following recent layoffs and high-level changes at the studio, raises new questions about the game’s future. While Ziegler stated he will be moving to a new project at another company, the management of Marathon has been handed over to two experienced developers.
Del Chafe III and Julia Nardin to Take Over Marathon Management
Joseph Ziegler joined Bungie in December 2022 after approximately 12 years at Riot Games. Previously the game director of Valorant, he was transferred to the studio to manage the Marathon project. In his announcement, Ziegler did not yet share his next role, stating that he will provide information about his new project in the future.
Del Chafe III will be the new game director for Marathon. Chafe, who has worked at Bungie for approximately 15 years, served as assistant game director on the project since April 2024. Creative director Julia Nardin will continue to shape the game’s story, world design, and overall creative direction.
Ziegler stated that both executives have long held strong leadership roles within the team and are ready to take the project to the next level. The former executive, defending Marathon’s strong position, indicated that new and unexpected updates will continue to be added to the game. These statements suggest that the departure is not related to the project’s cancellation.
The change comes shortly after a recent wave of layoffs affecting hundreds of employees at Bungie. The departure of studio head Justin Truman also made the management team’s transformation more visible. No official changes to Marathon’s development plan have been announced. However, the departure of the game’s head raises questions about how the new management will impact the gameplay systems and long-term content plan.
