Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Update 4.0 Released
Nintendo has released a surprise update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, originally released for the Switch in 2017 and rooted in the 2014 Wii U version. Version 4.0, arriving on September 1st, improves the game’s compatibility with the Nintendo Switch 2, making changes to visual quality, loading times, and multiplayer options. The scope of the update demonstrates Nintendo’s continued active support for a nearly 10-year-old game.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 4.0 Update Highlights Switch 2
On the Nintendo Switch 2, the game now better supports the console’s screen and high-resolution televisions. This aims for clearer image quality. Loading times before races and battles have also been shortened. Multiplayer mode now supports five to eight players on the same console.
Up to seven Switch controllers can be connected to the console for eight-player gameplay, but at least one Joy-Con 2 or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is required for the eighth player. CameraPlay support has also been added with the update. Players using USB cameras can display their faces on screen during races in certain multiplayer and online modes.
On the gameplay side, some balance changes have been made. The overall speed of racers has been increased to match the amount of a coin earned in-game. Players who become invisible using Boo no longer slow down when going off-road. A “96 Races” option has also been added to the VS Race settings for Booster Course Pass owners.
The extensive adaptation of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to the new generation console is noteworthy. While the Nintendo Switch 2 already has a new racing game, Mario Kart World, the company hasn’t completely abandoned the old game. The 4.0 update makes Mario Kart 8 Deluxe attractive again, especially for players who want crowded local multiplayer sessions and faster loading times.
