Tomb Raider: Catalyst Will Continue the Beloved Story of Lara Croft
Crystal Dynamics has largely dispelled the uncertainty surrounding which version of Lara Croft we’ll see in the future of the Tomb Raider series. Speaking at Gamescom, game director Raul Siqueira revealed that the Lara featured in Tomb Raider: Catalyst and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is the same character from the Survivor trilogy that began in 2013. This clarifies that the storyline established by the 2013 Tomb Raider, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be preserved in the new projects.

Siqueira stated that Crystal Dynamics is developing the two games in a connected way, but the projects will maintain their own identities. Specifically, Legacy of Atlantis aims to remain faithful to the original 1996 Tomb Raider. Therefore, the remake will use a modern interpretation of Lara Croft while striving to preserve the core structure and spirit of the original game.
In Catalyst, Lara’s journey will be carried forward. Instead of ignoring the character’s past, the development team is adopting an approach that respects both previous and subsequent adventures. According to Siqueira, the Lara we saw in the Survivor trilogy will remain the core version of the series in upcoming projects.
This decision also reduces the possibility of a character being completely reinterpreted. Instead of a completely different Lara, players will follow the character’s development, watching her transformation from a young archaeologist to an experienced adventurer. The fact that Tomb Raider: Catalyst has been delayed to 2028 means we’ll have to wait a little longer for this new chapter.
Crystal Dynamics also doesn’t want to force new players to finish previous games. While Catalyst continues the Survivor era, it’s designed to allow for direct entry into the story. This way, longtime fans can continue the journey of the Lara Croft they know, while new players can join this new era without extensive preparation.
