NVIDIA DLSS 5 Will Usher in a New Era
At GTC 2026, NVIDIA introduced its next-generation display technology, NVIDIA DLSS 5. Unlike previous DLSS versions, this technology doesn’t focus solely on improving performance. Instead, it aims to create a much closer-to-photorealistic visual experience in games using a new AI-powered lighting model. According to NVIDIA, NVIDIA DLSS 5 could usher in a new era in graphics by pushing the boundaries of current hardware.
NVIDIA DLSS 5 Offers Photorealistic Lighting
The new system is integrated into the game engine, like DLSS Super Resolution and Frame Generation, but its main difference lies in lighting. NVIDIA DLSS 5 recalculates the light behavior in the scene by analyzing only color data and motion vectors. This allows for much more realistic lighting and shadow effects without changing the game’s geometry or textures.
NVIDIA’s demos included games such as Resident Evil Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Oblivion Remastered, and Starfield. The detail of character skin, the way hair interacts with light, and reflections on metal surfaces create a significant visual leap. In environmental design, more natural shadows and improved ambient occlusion effects are noteworthy.
This technology can also distinguish between different materials when analyzing scenes. The AI system evaluates surfaces such as skin, hair, water, and metal separately, applying different lighting behaviors for each. This makes scenes look much more natural, and the distribution of light and shadow becomes more realistic, especially in complex areas like vegetation.
Currently, NVIDIA DLSS 5 is still under development. NVIDIA’s demos were shown using two RTX 5090 graphics cards; one running the game while the other handled DLSS 5 processes. However, the company states that once the technology is optimized, it will be offered running on a single GPU.
According to plans, NVIDIA DLSS 5 will be available for RTX 50 series graphics cards in the fall of 2026. NVIDIA believes this technology could be one of the strongest indicators that future graphics development will be driven more by software and artificial intelligence than hardware.
