PlayStation is Consulting Studios About the Future of Physical Gaming

PlayStation has faced significant backlash from gamers since announcing its plan to stop releasing new games on traditional discs starting in January 2028. While Sony hasn’t made many public statements about the decision, the situation may not be entirely resolved internally. According to a new claim shared by Moore’s Law Is Dead, Sony has sent a comprehensive survey to the studios it works with regarding the future of physical games.

PlayStation May Be Reconsidering Its Physical Game Decision

The claim suggests that the latest survey sent by Sony to studios is far more comprehensive than routine feedback rounds. Questions allegedly include whether the decision to end disc-based games is correct and whether removing physical versions will create problems for developers.

This doesn’t necessarily mean Sony will reverse its decision. However, negative feedback from studios could lead to at least a delay in the plans. In particular, the transition of physical games entirely to box sets containing codes is being considered as a possibility, possibly until the PS6 launch.

While large publishers are thought to be more comfortable with the transition to a digital model, the situation may be different for small and medium-sized studios. Some independent developers release their games digitally first and then prepare physical versions for collectors months later. This model still provides a significant revenue and support channel for their loyal player base.

However, all this information is currently based on a leak from Moore’s Law Is Dead and has not been confirmed by Sony. While the channel has a history of sharing accurate information regarding PlayStation, it has also made some inaccurate claims. Therefore, the new poll doesn’t show that physical games are saved, but it’s one of the first serious indications that Sony might be trying to gauge the studios’ reaction.
