id Software Faces Unrealistic Goals for Xbox

id Software is reportedly still experiencing tense internal relations as it prepares for its new project following a major downsizing in recent months. It was previously reported that approximately 75% of the studio’s workforce had been laid off, with the remaining team operating at a size close to that of the Doom 2016 era. Now, anonymous employee statements suggest that despite the downsizing, the team is facing higher commercial expectations.

id Software Doesn’t Find Xbox’s New Targets Realistic

An anonymous id Software employee, speaking to Aftermath, described the studio environment as still “chaotic.” According to the employee, the clearest message from Xbox management is that higher profitability needs to be achieved as quickly as possible. However, it is claimed that the targets set were already difficult to reach even before the layoffs.

id Software Faces Unrealistic Goals for Xbox

The same source argues that internal communication largely consists of corporate rhetoric and that Xbox has failed to present a clear plan for the future. The fact that expectations haven’t dropped despite significant staff losses has increased pressure on remaining employees. It’s stated that employee morale has also been severely affected by this process.

id Software had previously confirmed that it was continuing to work on a new game. The studio says that its current workforce is close to what it was during the development of Doom 2016 and that it has the capacity to continue production. However, the anonymous employee’s account suggests that while the team seems sufficient in terms of numbers, they may face a much more difficult situation in terms of workload and financial targets.

For now, neither Xbox nor id Software management has given an official response to these new allegations. Therefore, the phrase “unrealistic targets” remains an employee opinion. Nevertheless, the emergence of more aggressive profitability expectations immediately following the layoffs raises serious questions about the work environment in which the studio will continue its new project.
