Resident Evil Trailer Exclusive to Japan Reveals New Details
With the release of Resident Evil just a month away, Sony Pictures Entertainment has released a new trailer as part of Biohazard Day in Japan. The approximately 30-second video from the film, directed by Zach Cregger, largely features scenes we’ve seen before, but a few new images interspersed throughout suggest the film’s emphasis on body horror.
What New Scenes Were Featured in the Resident Evil Trailer?
One of the most striking scenes in the new trailer shows an infected person suddenly standing up, with tentacle-like extensions emerging from their cheek. Previous trailers have used disturbing imagery, such as a mass of people trying to exit a doorway. This new scene suggests the film will incorporate more physical and grotesque transformations alongside classic zombie horror.
A small image from the trailer shows Bryan, the main character, being captured by these extensions. Interestingly, however, this image isn’t included in the 30-second video. Therefore, it’s possible the scene is part of a longer sequence and will be shown in more detail in the film itself.
Director Zach Cregger previously stated that Bryan would be quite different from classic Resident Evil heroes. The character is a medic, but lacks any combat expertise and has very limited survival skills. Cregger describes Bryan as an ordinary person unwittingly drawn into a major mission. The story will focus on his struggle for survival amidst a terrifying Umbrella-caused outbreak.
The new Resident Evil adaptation seems to be moving away from the intense action approach seen in previous films and towards Cregger’s more unsettling horror style, known for films like Barbarian and Weapons. This trailer, released exclusively in Japan, particularly supports this with its transformation scenes. With the release date fast approaching, this could be one of the last major new visuals we’ll see before the film’s launch.
