Subnautica 2 Developers Don’t Uphold Violence

Subnautica 2 garnered significant attention after its early access release, with one of the most debated topics among players being the creature combat system. While the dangerous creatures of the underwater world heightened tension for some players, others wanted more direct ways to defend themselves. The development team is preparing to respond to this feedback while preserving the game’s core spirit.

Subnautica 2 Will Make Defense Tools More Useful

Unknown Worlds acknowledges that feedback from players indicates that creature encounters sometimes feel more frustrating than tense. The team notes that the current defense tools aren’t always clear, reliable, or satisfying enough. Therefore, they want to create a system where players better understand what to do when a creature attacks.

In this context, some improvements are already planned. The development team is working on the timing of creature aggression, aggro range, flare effects, Survival Tool usage, and the interaction of creatures with vehicles and bases. These changes will be added to the game gradually with upcoming patches, rather than in one major update.

However, the picture remains largely unchanged for the direct kill-focused combat system that players have been requesting. Unknown Worlds says they understand where the desire to kill creatures comes from. It’s natural for players to want more decisive solutions when defensive and evasive tools don’t feel good enough. Nevertheless, the team specifically emphasizes that Subnautica is not a game built on traditional gunfights.

According to the studio, Subnautica’s identity stems from a sense of vulnerability, exploration, and survival. The goal isn’t to turn the player into a planet-dominating hunter, but to force them to live cautiously in an unknown and dangerous world. Therefore, the main goal for Subnautica 2 will not be to add more violence, but to make the existing tension fairer and more understandable. Player feedback will continue to shape the game during the early access period.
