Supergirl Ends Its Box Office Journey in Big Disappointment

Supergirl was expected to be one of the key films strengthening the future of the DCU, but things didn’t go as planned. While Milly Alcock’s performance as Kara Zor-El received praise, the film struggled to attract audiences to theaters. The final figures after the theatrical run paint a rather disappointing picture for DC Studios’ new universe.

How Much Did Supergirl Earn at the Box Office?

Supergirl grossed $125.8 million worldwide, making it the lowest-grossing DC film since Catwoman (2004). Catwoman earned $82 million, but when inflation is factored in, Supergirl’s performance looks even worse. The film also lagged behind Joker: Folie à Deux ($83 million) and Morbius ($45 million).

The film opened with $37.1 million in North America and just over $62 million worldwide. This opening showed that it would be quite difficult for the film to recoup its budget in its first weekend. It’s reported that Supergirl had a production budget of approximately $170 million, with at least $100 million spent on marketing.

The film didn’t even come close to the $206.1 million result of Marvel Studios’ lowest-grossing film, The Marvels. It also didn’t surpass Wonder Woman 1984’s $169.6 million, Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ $134 million, and Blue Beetle’s $130 million. Moreover, Wonder Woman 1984 was simultaneously released on HBO Max during the pandemic.

DC Studios co-president Peter Safran acknowledged that not every project would be a success, stating that the company’s 10-year plan wasn’t based on a single film. Nevertheless, the fact that the new DCU achieved such a result with only its second feature film inevitably raises questions. Supergirl is now available on digital platforms and will be released in 4K Blu-ray on September 8th. Kara Zor-El will also reappear in the Man of Tomorrow film next summer.
