The End of the Road for Highguard
Highguard, which made an ambitious launch at the beginning of the year, unfortunately failed to compete in the live server market. Negative feedback after launch, declining player numbers, and downsizing within the studio indicated that things weren’t going as planned. Now, the team has confirmed that the game will be permanently shut down.
Highguard Shuts Down Servers on March 12th
Highguard will permanently shut down as of March 12th. Released at the end of January, the game faced mostly negative reviews on Steam from the very first days. Gameplay balance, lack of content, and technical problems were among the most frequently mentioned issues. The team tried to change the situation with new mods and updates in the following weeks, but they couldn’t gain momentum.
In February, it was announced that the studio was downsizing. This decision was interpreted as a serious signal regarding the project’s future. The latest official statement explicitly stated that “a sustainable player base could not be established in the long term.” The invitation to players to play one last time before the servers shut down also shows the team’s emotional attachment to the project.
It was known that Tencent had financial support for the project. However, it was reported that this support was withdrawn after the game failed to meet its performance targets. The current number of concurrent players dropping to double-digit levels once again reveals how fragile the continuity of a live service model is.
Highguard attracted attention with its announcement at the 2025 Game Awards. However, in today’s market, a good idea or a strong launch alone is not enough. Retaining the player base and ensuring the sustainability of the content stream are just as critical as the start. Highguard’s early departure clearly reminds us of this fact.
