The Reason Destiny 3 wasn’t Made is Purely Emotional

Cost Barrier for Destiny 3
According to reports, Bungie didn’t start developing Destiny 3 directly after The Final Shape because such a project would have had a very high budget. Building a large-scale live service game from scratch means new technology, content creation, team planning, and long-term support. In a vast universe like Destiny, this decision carries not only creative but also serious financial risks.
Currently, Bungie’s focus is on Marathon instead of Destiny 3. While the studio’s new extraction shooter project is struggling to garner the expected interest, support plans are reportedly still in place. This is somewhat frustrating for the Destiny community, as players have long desired a new main game to expand the universe they’ve been so attached to, while Bungie seems to be focusing its energy on another project.
It’s claimed that new Destiny ideas are being presented and prototypes are being prepared within Bungie, but none have been approved by Sony. Expectations were high after Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie in 2022, but the recent financial picture doesn’t look very bright for the studio. The reported $765 million drop in Bungie’s value may have led to more cautious decisions.
All this doesn’t mean Destiny 3 is completely dead, but it’s difficult to be optimistic in the short term. With the final major update for Destiny 2 approaching, players are wondering about both the future of the series and Bungie’s next move. The situation is a little bittersweet for now: the light is still on, but the wait for a new Guardian adventure seems likely to be longer.
