A new claim has emerged regarding why this system, previously tested in some countries, has not been launched globally.
Xbox Game Pass Family Plan May Have Been Blocked by EA
The Xbox Game Pass family plan was envisioned as a system that would allow users to include up to four additional users in their subscription. Similar to Netflix’s account-sharing model, this seemed particularly attractive to users with multiple players in the same household or nearby area. The system was previously tested in markets such as Ireland and Colombia, but despite the years that have passed, a widespread release has not taken place.
According to a new claim, an unexpected name may be behind this delay: Electronic Arts. According to information reported by Jez Corden of Windows Central, the project has been canceled, and one of the main reasons is that EA wasn’t keen on the idea of a family plan. Allegedly, EA seriously disliked this model, making it difficult for Xbox to move forward with the plan.
EA holds a significant place in the Game Pass ecosystem. The company’s early relationship with the service and EA Play integration provided a valuable advantage for Xbox. Therefore, it’s not surprising that Microsoft would consider the reactions of publisher partners in a major change like a family plan. However, from a player’s perspective, it’s frustrating that such a useful feature has been delayed for years.
Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to place all the blame on EA. The final decision rests with Microsoft and Xbox. If the company had truly prioritized this plan, they could have moved forward with different agreements. For now, the Xbox Game Pass family plan doesn’t seem to be coming anytime soon. However, as subscription prices and content strategy change, it could be a pleasant surprise for players if Xbox brings this idea back to the table in the future.
