The Sony PSP Can Now Run Counter-Strike
Counter-Strike has remained one of the most important representatives of competitive shooter games for years. The PocketJS team of mod developers has created an open-source project called OpenStrike, adapting the series’ familiar gameplay to Sony’s classic portable console. While not a direct Counter-Strike port, it stands out for running similar visuals and mechanics quite smoothly on PSP hardware.
Counter-Strike Experience Runs at 60 FPS on PSP
Images shared by PocketJS show that OpenStrike can be played on the original PSP hardware. According to the development team, the game runs at a stable 60 FPS target at the console’s native 480 x 272 pixel resolution. The map structure, weapon recoil, bullet traces, and bot behavior closely resemble the original Counter-Strike experience. Therefore, at first glance, the project might give the impression of being a portable version of the classic game.
One of OpenStrike’s most notable technical details is its use of approximately 12 MB of RAM. The game runs on the original PSP-1000 model, which operates at 333 MHz. While Rust is used for bot mechanics, movement, collisions, and image rendering, the interface and scoring system are developed using TypeScript and JavaScript. Open JavaScript mod support allows the community to expand the project.
To avoid straining the PSP’s limited hardware, the developers utilize various optimization methods. Lighting is directly integrated into corner colors, preventing the creation of invisible geometries on the screen. This reduces processing load and ensures more stable gameplay. OpenStrike does not directly use Valve’s maps or copyrighted content and is being developed as a completely independent Counter-Strike alternative.
The project is currently in version 0.1 and does not offer a complete multiplayer experience. Despite its shortcomings, OpenStrike proves that a modern competitive shooter infrastructure can run on the PSP. The game, which can be installed on consoles with Homebrew support using the EBOOT file, can also be launched via the PPSSPP emulator. Users need to provide the compatible BSP and WAD files themselves to run it.
