While Troy Baker, who plays Joel, hasn’t directly shared any information about a possible sequel, he has stated that he is completely open to returning to the series. His comments regarding Joel and Tommy’s past have reignited discussions about whether the new game could explore different eras.
The Last of Us Part 3 Could Return to Joel and Tommy’s Past
Troy Baker was asked about the idea of the third game in the series returning to the early years of the apocalypse instead of continuing Ellie’s story. The proposed scenario centers on the period before Ellie was born, when Joel and Tommy are trying to survive together in the post-apocalyptic world. Baker stated that he is ready to participate in such a project and would accept the offer if Neil Druckmann wrote a suitable role for him.
According to the player, the fact that much of what happened between Joel and Tommy remains a mystery could form a strong foundation for a new story. The first game left a significant time gap of about 20 years between the start of the outbreak and Joel’s meeting with Ellie. What the two brothers experienced during those years, why they parted ways, and how their relationship deteriorated weren’t explained in detail.
Baker acknowledges that Naughty Dog could go in a completely different direction. The series has many options, including going back to the past, continuing the journey of the current characters, or creating a completely new narrative that hasn’t been considered before. The player emphasized that the creative decision rests with Neil Druckmann and the development team, and he trusts the studio’s story choices.
Naughty Dog is currently heavily involved in Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Therefore, The Last of Us Part 3 hasn’t been officially announced, and it’s unknown whether it’s even in development. Troy Baker stated that whether or not he’s involved in the new project, he’ll experience the game from day one. While this statement doesn’t offer direct confirmation, it doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of Joel returning to his past.
