World’s Largest Spider Web Discovered

Scientists have made an unprecedented discovery in the Sulfur Cave, on the border of Greece and Albania. Deep within the cave, a giant spider web measuring over 100 square meters was discovered. More than 100,000 spiders of two different species live in this web. Experts believe this discovery is a world first, both for its sheer size and the spiders’ communal lifestyle.

Sulfur Cave Revealed as the Spiders’ Secret Kingdom

István Urák of Sapientia University in Transylvania, who led the team that made the discovery, says the findings prove that the two species coexist in colonies. Normally solitary, Tegenaria domestica and Prinerigone vagans coexist peacefully within the same web in this cave. The researchers explain this is thanks to the cave’s “abundance of resources” and its unique chemical ecosystem.

Sulphur Cave, in an environment completely devoid of sunlight, supports life thanks to chemosynthetic microorganisms that feed on chemical energy. The small creatures that feed on these microbes then become prey for the spiders. This system, in other words, relies entirely on sulfur, not on photosynthesis.

Scientists have determined that the web is formed by the assembly of thousands of funnel-shaped structures, and that the spiders have built this giant “spider city” over many years. Genetic analyses have revealed that cave spiders have diverged from their surface-dwelling relatives and evolved into a new genetic lineage due to their isolated existence.

Researchers say this discovery is crucial not only for understanding spider behavior but also for understanding evolutionary adaptation in closed ecosystems. One of the most intriguing aspects is that the insects these spiders hunt are also born and raised within the cave. In other words, the world of this mysterious web operates as an ecosystem completely isolated from the outside world.
