A Continent-Sized Megastructure has been Discovered Beneath Antarctica
Scientists have discovered a massive, previously unknown network of basins beneath the Antarctic ice. According to new research published in the journal Nature Geoscience, this structure is called the East Antarctic Fan-Shaped Basin Region. The international research team was led by geophysicist Egidio Armadillo from the University of Genoa. The study reveals that the basins beneath the continent are part of a much larger and more interconnected system than previously known structures.
Basins Beneath Antarctica Spanning 2,000 Kilometers
Researchers uncovered this hidden structure by piecing together large datasets collected over the years using various methods. The study utilized seismic measurements, radar scans, subglacial topography data, and models showing how the land surface would rise when the massive ice load on the continent lifts. When the land structure, which lies beneath approximately 27 million cubic kilometers of ice, was remodeled, a giant basin pattern was observed radiating outwards from a central point near the South Pole.

Scientists liken this structure to a hand-opened fan. The central point acts like the fan’s hinge, while the basins radiate outwards from it. These basins are said to stretch along approximately 2,000 kilometers of coastline. According to researchers, this pattern may be linked to a geological process called rotational extension, where the Earth’s crust stretches and rotates around a central focus.
The significance of the discovery is not limited to understanding the continent’s past. These basins lie beneath approximately half of the East Antarctic ice sheet, and in some areas, are located as far below the ice as 3 kilometers. Ice sheets do not move independently of the underlying rock; rather, the slopes, grooves, and depressions of this bedrock directly influence the direction of ice flow. Therefore, the newly discovered basin network could provide critical data for understanding ice movements in Antarctica.
The future of Antarctic ice sheets is becoming increasingly important due to climate change. Knowing the structure of the bedrock beneath the continent is invaluable for predicting how the ice might move in the coming years. This new megastructure discovery shows that Antarctica is not just the ice visible on the surface, but still holds vast secrets beneath that surface that can help us understand the planet’s climate and geological history.
