Xbox Game Pass Cloud Gaming with Ads is Now Open for Testing
The ad-supported Xbox Game Pass model has begun testing for users participating in the Xbox Insider program. Microsoft’s ad-supported cloud gaming service, which they have been working on for some time, allows players to stream their existing games without requiring a paid subscription. During the testing phase, some limitations are applied to session duration and ad impressions.
How Will the Ad-Supported Xbox Game Pass Work?
Under the new system, Xbox Insider users will be able to play previously purchased games for free via the cloud. An ad will be shown before each session begins, and game time will be limited to one hour. Users with a paid Xbox Game Pass subscription will not need to watch ads. Thus, the service is positioned as a free alternative rather than a replacement for existing subscriptions.
The ad-supported option is currently only available for a limited testing period. In previous internal trials, players had to watch approximately two minutes of ads before starting a session. It’s not yet clear whether ad durations will remain the same in the insider test or vary in different regions.
Microsoft states that the system will also provide Xbox One owners with access to new games. Thanks to cloud technology, users will be able to play some titles developed for Xbox Series X/S without purchasing a new console. This approach could make it easier for players using older hardware to access more current games, while also expanding the reach of cloud gaming services.
The company also emphasizes that ads will not be shown during gameplay and will not interrupt the flow of gameplay. The goal is for ads to be clearly indicated, appropriate to the content quality, and consistent with the expectations of the platform being used. When the ad-supported Xbox Game Pass service will be available to everyone will depend on the results of the tests.
