6 Dark Wizards Confirmed in Harry Potter Series
As HBO’s new Harry Potter series continues production, the Dark wizards who will appear in the first season are beginning to be revealed. While characters like Voldemort and Bellatrix, the main villains, will appear in subsequent seasons, it’s already been confirmed that many darker figures will enter the story, even during the Philosopher’s Stone era. The series’ strong cast and expanded narrative are generating high expectations for how these characters will be adapted for the screen.
Confirmed Wizards in the Harry Potter Series
Quirinus Quirrell
Quirinus Quirrell, the surprise villain of the first season, will be played by Luke Thallon. It will be revealed towards the season finale that this young and timid Hogwarts teacher has actually been possessed by Voldemort. While Quirrell isn’t a true Dark wizard, his encounter with Voldemort during his journeys makes him a formidable threat.
Severus Snape
Potions master Severus Snape will be played by Paapa Essiedu. Snape was once a Death Eater, but later switches sides and becomes one of Dumbledore’s most important allies. The uncertainty surrounding his loyalties will persist throughout the series, and his true role will be clarified in later seasons.
Draco Malfoy
Although only an 11-year-old Slytherin student, it has been known for years that Draco Malfoy will turn to the dark side. Portrayed by Lox Pratt, Malfoy will be Harry’s greatest rival from the first season onward, and in later seasons, he will follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Death Eater.
Lucius Malfoy
This time, Johnny Flynn plays Lucius Malfoy. Malfoy, who first appeared in the books in the second year, has been confirmed to be returning to the first season of the series. Lucius will be introduced early in the story as a staunch supporter of Voldemort, and his identity as a Dark wizard will be strengthened from season to season.
Vincent Crabbe
Vincent Crabbe, one of Draco’s followers, comes from a Dark wizarding family. He will be played by Finn Stephens in the series and will be a key part of the bullying dynamics within Hogwarts. As in the books, his fate will be shaped by a deadly spell in later seasons.
Gregory Goyle
William Nash will portray Crabbe’s close friend Gregory Goyle in the series. Goyle, whose father was a Death Eater, will be one of Draco’s staunchest supporters at Hogwarts. The dramatic events he experiences in the final seasons will likely be faithful to the books.
BONUS: Lord Voldemort
Voldemort’s full appearance in the first season has not yet been confirmed; however, due to Quirrell’s storyline, he is expected to appear in some capacity in the finale. It is also known that the series will feature new scenes depicting the 1981 attack on the Potter family, suggesting that Voldemort may make a brief appearance in the season.
