Microsoft is Selling its Toy Xbox for More than the Real Xbox
For those who love the original Xbox design, the new collector’s set looks quite nice, but the price is quite a challenge. Microsoft and Mattel have announced a new buildable set of the first Xbox, allowing users to create a full-scale replica. It includes the classic Duke controller and small dioramas themed around Halo, Morrowind, and Psychonauts. But the funny thing is: the set is more expensive than the original Xbox itself.
Xbox Collector’s Set to Go on Sale for $324
The set, created by Mattel, will go on sale on October 16, 2026. It will be priced at $324 on Amazon and Mattel Creations, and $329.99 at Best Buy. So, we have a very expensive collector’s item that doesn’t even run games but is almost as expensive as a real console.
The best part of the set isn’t just its appearance. The buildable Duke controller connects to the Xbox, and each of the XYBA buttons triggers different light and sound effects. These effects work in conjunction with three different dioramas and the console itself.
The dioramas aren’t just small decorations either. They feature scenes from Halo, Morrowind, and Psychonauts, and include approximately 1-inch NanoWorld figures of characters like Master Chief and Dagoth Ur. These figures can be removed from the diorama and displayed separately.
Clearly, the idea is great, especially for those nostalgic for the original Xbox era – a perfect display piece. But the $324 price tag inevitably makes you think, “Why don’t I just buy a real console for that price?” This time, Xbox is offering a collectible set to look at on a tabletop, not a playable device, and it’s not being modest about the price.
