Blizzard Announces Overwatch Rush
While Overwatch has recently experienced a resurgence, Blizzard seems determined to expand this momentum. With the increased player numbers and community activity since Season 1, the company has officially announced a new project to bring the Overwatch universe to mobile platforms. Called Overwatch Rush, this game will offer a standalone experience.
Overwatch Rush is Being Developed from Scratch for Mobile
According to Blizzard’s official blog post, Overwatch Rush is being designed as a top-down hero-shooter. The development team specifically emphasizes that this is not a port; the game is being developed from scratch for mobile devices and aims to offer a completely new experience.
It has been announced that the project is being developed by a different team within Blizzard, not by Team 4, the main Overwatch team. Team 4 will continue to focus on the main game on PC and consoles. This separation seems to allow the mobile project to progress without conflicting with the main game.
Overwatch Rush is currently in early development and undergoing testing in select countries. Blizzard stated that they will continue to share updates on the game’s development and that players can follow updates on their official Discord channel.
The top-down perspective and mobile-focused design could bring a fresh perspective to the Overwatch universe. However, details such as the game’s competitive nature, hero balance, and microtransaction model are not yet clear. Only time will tell whether Blizzard’s mobile move will introduce the Overwatch brand to a new audience.
