Fallout: London is concerned about Fallout 5’s use of the Creation Engine

As the Fallout universe prepares to return with a new main game, behind-the-scenes comments are attracting attention. The head of the Fallout: London team has openly expressed concerns about Bethesda’s long-standing game engine. This assessment, specifically regarding Fallout 5, has reignited technical discussions about the future of the series.

The Engine Debate for Fallout 5 is Back on the Agenda

Fallout: London project leader Dean Carter expressed his discomfort with the possibility of Fallout 5 still being developed with a Creation Engine-based infrastructure. According to Carter, while the engine has its strengths, it has aged significantly over the years and is now struggling to meet modern expectations. Therefore, it is thought that Bethesda should either abandon the Creation Engine or undertake a comprehensive overhaul.

Bethesda’s engine history goes back quite a long time. Since the Morrowind era, Bethesda Game Studios has preferred to use different versions of the same technological foundation. The Creation Engine continued this process, appearing in Fallout 4 and later Starfield. However, loading screens, performance issues, and lack of optimization have long been among the main criticisms from players.

Dean Carter states that they encountered similar problems during the development of Fallout: London. He emphasizes that the desire to create large, uninterrupted areas clashed with the engine’s limitations. He says they wanted to avoid loading screens, but paid the price with performance issues. According to Carter, a new engine or a significant technical overhaul could overcome these problems for Fallout 5.

Carter also acknowledges that the unstable operation of some areas in Fallout: London stems from these choices. He states that they wanted to avoid loading screens to maintain the atmosphere, but the current engine wasn’t flexible enough for this approach. This experience once again highlights how critical the technical decisions for Fallout 5 are.
