Former Valve Writer Stays Away from Half-Life 3

When Half-Life 3 is mentioned, expectations, rumors, and humor all get mixed up in the gaming world. Chet Faliszek, a former writer for Valve, is well aware of this. Faliszek, who worked on projects like Half-Life 2 episodes, Portal, and Left 4 Dead, specifically stated that he wasn’t hinting at anything new in his statement. Because when it comes to Half-Life, the internet is quite ready to connect even the smallest sentence to a new game announcement.

Half-Life 3 Pressure Scares Former Writer

Responding to the comment that Valve making Half-Life 3 would be “too easy” and the story could go anywhere, Chet Faliszek said that it’s not actually that simple. According to him, continuing the story might seem easy for some people, but communities expecting deep lore make things seriously difficult. Faliszek sees himself more as a writer interested in the characters’ immediate reactions.

The former Valve writer has openly stated that he doesn’t want to return to series with particularly strong historical and narrative details. This is because players can remember details from years ago and react negatively to changes. Faliszek believes that touching an old story brings with it immense pressure. This is why he’s hesitant not only about Half-Life but about sequels in general.

Faliszek also mentioned that he once discussed the possibility of working with Bungie. However, the sheer amount of lore in their games scared him. In his own words, he doesn’t want to write within the vast history of another universe when he doesn’t even remember the details of his own life that well. Therefore, he sees sequels as a “nightmare.”

The most amusing part of the statement was Faliszek’s complete rejection of the idea of returning to the Half-Life universe. He didn’t just say “I don’t want to”; he even included references to gravity guns, long sticks, and Dog’s arms to humorously explain his distance. The anticipation for Half-Life 3 may still be alive for players, but Chet Faliszek doesn’t want to come near that legendary pressure.
