Fortnite Gambling Feature Leaked
The popular battle royale game Fortnite is making headlines with an unexpected feature in its new update. According to reliable sources, “gambling mechanics” will be integrated into the game. However, Epic Games has denied this claim, stating that the system actually involves “paid random items” and is not considered gambling.
Epic Games Denies Gambling Allegations in Fortnite
The allegations were made by ShiinaBR, a trusted leaker in the Fortnite community. According to the leak, a system is being developed in which players can purchase random items using V-Bucks in games developed using the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN). It is also noted that this system may be restricted in some regions due to different countries’ gambling laws. However, Epic Games stated, “Our developer guidelines strictly prohibit gambling or casino-style content.”
Epic Games emphasized that the feature in question is similar to “loot box” systems, but does not involve wagering real money. The company stated that developers are “obligated to clearly state the odds of winning” to users before each purchase. Despite this, some players argue that such mechanics fall under the definition of gambling.
A similar structure has actually been indirectly present in user-created games like Fortnite. For example, in modes like “Pet Heroes Adventure,” players spent in-game currency to unlock rare creatures. However, the new system allows direct payment with V-Bucks for the first time. This was interpreted by some community members as “indirectly introducing gambling into the game.”
The repercussions of the incident were particularly severe in European countries. Countries like Belgium banned loot box systems in 2018, classifying them as “gambling.” Despite Epic Games’ statement, it is believed that this system, which will be introduced to Fortnite, could push legal boundaries. The company announced that it will share more information about the feature’s full functionality in the coming days.
