FromSoftware’s Prequel RPG to Dark Souls has been Revealed
Today, FromSoftware, known for titles like Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Sekiro, has a history stretching back to projects far different from what most gamers realize. Before its breakthrough with the Souls genre, the studio developed a role-playing game that was in keeping with the spirit of its time but was subsequently forgotten. Years later, this game has been rediscovered, offering an interesting window into FromSoftware’s evolution.
FromSoftware Tried a Different Path Before Dark Souls
The game in question is Enchanted Arms, released in 2006, which followed classic JRPG tropes. Released during the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 era, it offered an experience quite different from FromSoftware’s well-known, dark action style today. The game stood out with its turn-based role-playing system centered around a main character with a magical arm.
Enchanted Arms, like many JRPGs of its time, had high ambitions but achieved only average success. While it had a unique identity with its linear structure, unusual world, and distinctive character designs, it failed to reach a wide audience. Nevertheless, the game is seen as an important example of FromSoftware’s ability to experiment outside of a single genre.
After the great success of Dark Souls, the studio focused on projects built around that formula. This led to early works like Enchanted Arms being overshadowed. However, looking back today, it’s clearer that FromSoftware was not afraid to take risks with this game.
The game’s resurgence reminds us of FromSoftware’s past involvement in various genres. Whether the studio, which reached its peak with the Souls games, will return to this experimental spirit in the future remains a question.
