God of War: Sons of Sparta Received One of the Lowest Scores in the Series

God of War Sons of Sparta was released to players following a surprise announcement and quickly became the focus of both user and critic reviews. The game, which deviated from the series’ usual formula with its 2D Metroidvania structure, was seen as a bold step by some players, while others found it to be below expectations. Given the high standards of the series, the initial scores naturally led to comparisons with previous games.

God of War: Sons of Sparta Ranks Lower in the Series

God of War Sons of Sparta currently has a user score of 8.2 on Metacritic. Its average on the PlayStation Store is 4.81 stars. While these scores don’t look bad on paper, they rank lower when compared to the series’ past. Considering that God of War 2 has a 9.1, and God of War 3 and the 2018 God of War have 9.0, the new game naturally sits in the lower ranks of the list.

This ranking makes the game one of the lowest-scoring games in the series. However, it’s noteworthy that the differences are quite small. For example, Ragnarök has a score of 8.3 and Chains of Olympus has 8.4, showing that Sons of Sparta is actually in a highly competitive environment. So, a low ranking doesn’t mean a weak game; rather, it reflects the overall high quality of the series.

On the critics’ side, initial reviews are more cautious. Some reviews state that the game’s retro visual style doesn’t appeal to everyone and that the Metroidvania structure isn’t innovative enough. However, there are also opinions that the combat system opens up as the game progresses and that it preserves the spirit of the series. The focus on Kratos’s youth and the nostalgic narrative tone are particularly well-received details.

Player reviews, however, generally paint a balanced picture. Many users consider the game a “solid but not groundbreaking” side story. While God of War Sons of Sparta may not be at the pinnacle of the series, it seems to have found a reasonable place for itself within its strong brand legacy.
