According to new reports, The Hunt for Gollum takes place approximately 20 years before The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. This makes it a direct bridge between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. Specifically, the dark years following Bilbo’s 111th birthday, when Gandalf leaves the Shire to track down Gollum, appear to form the backbone of the story.
This period is extremely critical in the Tolkien universe. Because it’s precisely here that Gandalf investigates the true nature of the Ring, Aragorn hunts Gollum, and Sauron’s shadow grows ever larger.
