Hytale Developer Doesn’t Trust Modders
Hytale, a new sandbox game, has already begun to attract significant attention from the modding community despite being in early access. Players are already creating different worlds, systems, and content, while the development team continues to make statements supporting the modding culture.
Hytale Team Doesn’t Expect Modders to Carry the Game
Studio founder Simon Collins-Laflamme stated that the modding community will play an important role in Hytale’s future. However, Collins-Laflamme specifically emphasized that modders exist not to fill in the game’s shortcomings, but to expand the game’s world. According to him, the modding system will be one of the game’s cornerstones, but the development team does not intend to leave the responsibility for the game entirely to the modding community.
To support this approach, the development team has also launched new initiatives for modders, most notably a $100,000 modding competition. Collins-Laflamme describes this event as “a kind of esports for modders,” stating that they want to reward creative content produced by the community.
One reason Hypixel Studios places so much importance on modding is its history. Hypixel Studios actually started years ago as a community developing Minecraft mods. These projects later grew into a massive Minecraft server network, eventually laying the foundation for the Hytale project.
Collins-Laflamme also believes the modding community is a vital area for discovering talent. He notes that the studio currently employs over 70 people, many of whom are hired directly from the modding community. According to him, a strong modding ecosystem will not only generate new content for players but also uncover future Hytale developers.
