In Subnautica 2, an Average of 192 Players Drown Every Minute
Even before two months had passed since its early access release, Subnautica 2 made headlines with its bizarre underwater adventures. Official statistics shared by Unknown Worlds show that, across millions of hours of gameplay, the biggest danger wasn’t terrifying creatures, but rather lack of oxygen. The figures reached by the community also reveal just how brutal the game’s survival mechanics can be.
Oxygen Became the Biggest Enemy for Subnautica 2 Players
According to data released by Unknown Worlds, Subnautica 2 players have spent over 58 million hours in total. During this time, players drowned 15,636,881 times due to lack of oxygen. Drowning accounted for 42.6% of all player deaths in the game, making it by far the most common cause of death.
The game was released in early access on May 14, 2026 at 6 PM, and the statistics were shared on July 9, 2026 at 6 PM. Considering the time between these two dates, it’s estimated that an average of 192 players drowned every minute in Subnautica 2. Furthermore, the fact that players can use oxygen tanks and collect breathable bubbles from some underwater plants makes the picture even more interesting.
Other shared statistics show the vast distances the community has covered in the underwater world. Players traveled a total of 545,615,747 kilometers in Proteus’ oceans. This distance is approximately 86.8% of the distance between Earth and Jupiter. Despite this, the few meters needed to reach the surface seem to be an insurmountable obstacle for millions of players.
The Subnautica 2 community has also collected over 331 million slugs and produced a total of 5,887,642 Tadpole submarines. One of the most unusual details shared was that one player built a whopping 195 Tadpoles in a single save file. The game’s first early access update will be released this week.
