The potential announcement of Shenmue 4 has once again exploded into the headlines with a mysterious trailer that has surfaced online. This off-screen, low-resolution video has both piqued curiosity with its compelling details and sparked a significant debate due to its unknown source. With The Game Awards just days away, the trailer’s authenticity has divided Shenmue fans.
Is the Shenmue 4 Trailer Real or Fake?
The trailer first appeared on an anonymous YouTube channel with only six followers and no previous leaks. This naturally fueled suspicions. But the interesting part is that the video is over four minutes long and features scenes quite consistent with Shenmue 3’s visual style. Details like Ryo washing dishes, arm wrestling, and learning kung fu techniques perfectly capture the spirit of the game.
On the other hand, the video is so low-resolution that close inspection is nearly impossible. Considering we’re in the age of artificial intelligence, such off-screen videos are quite easy to produce. However, the trailer’s length and consistency have led many to say, “Even if it’s fake, it’s very professionally produced.”
One section of particular scrutiny by the community is the “Shenmue Fighters” minigame. It’s being speculated that this section, which appears to be an arcade fighting game similar to Street Fighter, may have been generated by AI. The minigame animations give it a slightly different feel than the overall trailer.
Despite all this, the high demand for Shenmue 4 is undeniable. Last year, fans rented a giant billboard in Times Square to issue a public appeal to Yu Suzuki. If the trailer is real, it wouldn’t be surprising if the announcement came at The Game Awards 2025. If it’s fake… even then, the sheer volume of Shenmue fans’ enthusiasm is clear.
