The management change at Lucasfilm is slowly bringing to light projects that had been left behind the scenes. Following Kathleen Kennedy’s departure from the company, interviews and industry sources confirmed that a previously unannounced Indiana Jones animated series was in development. Based on the narrative bridge strategy used in Star Wars animation projects, this production aimed to fill the gaps between the films and was quietly shelved at some point.
Why Was the Indiana Jones Animated Series Canceled?
According to the information that has emerged, the Indiana Jones animated series was designed to tell the story of events that took place between the films. Just as Star Wars: The Clone Wars filled the gap between Episode II and Episode III, or Rebels paved the way for the classic trilogy, this production aimed to expand the series’ timeline. The project was being developed within Lucasfilm under the codename “Reggie,” a name derived from the famous snake in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The series was creatively led by Rodrigo Blaas, known for Star Wars: Visions. This indicates that the project was planned not just as a side project, but as a serious animation production in terms of style and narrative. However, the difficulties the Indiana Jones brand experienced on the cinematic side during Kennedy’s tenure directly affected the future of the animation projects.
The failure of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, released in 2023, to meet expectations at the box office despite its large budget, caused alarm bells to ring at Disney. Despite its high production costs, the film resulted in a significant loss on the company’s balance sheets, leading to a reassessment of all Indiana Jones projects under Lucasfilm. It is believed that the animated series was quietly canceled during this process.
Kennedy’s departure and Dave Filoni’s rise to a stronger creative role have revived fans’ hopes. Previously, different narrative approaches within the universe had been attempted with television projects like The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, and the recently released Indiana Jones and the Great Circle game has kept interest in the brand alive.
