Many Game Developers are Considering Leaving the Industry
The wave of layoffs in recent years, affecting a wide range of companies from large studios to independent teams, has created a lasting sense of insecurity among game developers. The fact that an industry once considered a “dream” is now so fragile is seen as a sign of not only economic but also structural change. In particular, the radical decisions made by large companies and the pressure for technological transformation directly affect developers’ outlook for the future.
Game Developers Concerned About Job Security
According to research by the recruitment firm Skillsearch, 44% of game developers are considering leaving the industry entirely. This study, conducted with approximately 1000 developers working in various fields worldwide, reveals that job security has become the biggest problem. Only 35% of participants stated that they were not affected by layoffs in the last year, while the vast majority either lost their jobs directly or experienced team downsizing.
Another striking aspect of this process is the increasing difficulty of finding a job. It is stated that only 45% of laid-off developers are able to find a new position, with a significant portion having to search for work for months. This clearly reveals that the sector is not as stable as it appears from the outside and harbors significant uncertainty for employees.
On the other hand, artificial intelligence (AI) is also at the center of the debate. According to the research, 64% of developers believe that the use of AI in the sector negatively impacts creativity. Concerns that this technology could further weaken job security are also widespread. Despite this, more than half of the developers continue to use AI tools in their daily workflows.
Looking at the overall picture, game developers are caught between job security and the pressure created by technological transformation. The continued layoffs and the sector’s struggle to adapt to new dynamics indicate that these discussions will intensify in the coming period.
