The actor admitted that Superman’s killing of Zod was the film’s most controversial scene, but he emphasized that these choices were deliberate. “Zack Snyder deliberately constructed this. It’s unintentional for Superman to kill, but here he had no choice. He had to kill Zod to save people,” Shannon said, explaining that the scene was intended to make the audience feel the price of heroism.
The actor also defended the film’s overall approach, saying, “Man of Steel actually tells a story. Many people said it was a commercial move by Snyder, but I love this film because it has meaning.” According to Shannon, the film wasn’t just a superhero story; it was also a moral narrative about humanity, sacrifice, and choices.
Criticism at the time of the film’s release particularly focused on Superman’s characterization and tone. However, Shannon argued that Man of Steel offered a different experience compared to superhero films of the time.
