MindsEye is offering sponsorship on Steam despite having only 6 players

MindsEye, one of the most criticized games of 2025, continues to be debated even months after its release. Disappointing due to technical issues, an empty open world, and a feeling of incompleteness, the game is making headlines on Steam with single-digit player numbers. Despite this, the developer studio seems to have chosen an unexpected path instead of abandoning the game altogether.

Controversial Marketing Move for MindsEye

Developed by Build A Rocket Boy, MindsEye is still being promoted with sponsored content despite having an average of around 6 concurrent players per day on Steam. Most recently, a video published by a content creator, clearly bearing a sponsorship label, has sparked sarcastic comments on social media, contrasting sharply with the game’s current situation.

MindsEye was already facing a difficult period due to the harsh criticism it received upon launch. Comments suggesting the game was rushed into release, its mission structure was repetitive, and its open world was largely empty quickly extinguished player interest. Following this, the studio’s decision to continue sponsorship spending is seen by many as a difficult one to understand.

Instead of abandoning MindsEye entirely, the development team is trying to transform the game into a user-generated sandbox. The goal is to offer players a more free experience through updates. However, current player numbers raise questions about how well this transformation is being received.

On the other hand, recent layoffs and internal studio problems at Build A Rocket Boy further complicate the situation. Given the studio’s reportedly limited resources, it’s speculated that their efforts to keep MindsEye afloat may be due to a lack of resources to develop a new project.

Sponsorship for a game that’s practically unplayed on Steam is a rare occurrence in the gaming industry. While it remains unclear whether this move will change MindsEye’s fate, it’s already being hailed as one of the strangest marketing choices of the year.
