More than Half of Game Developers are Against AI

As debates about AI in the gaming industry intensify, developers’ perspectives on the issue are becoming clearer. A recent survey reveals that a large majority of game developers believe generative AI is harming the industry. The significant shift in perception, particularly in the last two years, highlights the divisions within the sector.

Why Game Developers Are Reacting Against AI

According to a survey published by the Game Developers Conference, 52% of over 2,300 gaming industry professionals believe generative AI has a negative impact on the gaming industry. This figure was only 18% two years ago. In short, negative perceptions of AI have almost tripled in a short period.

More than Half of Game Developers are Against AI

According to the survey results, only 7% of developers view generative AI positively. This figure was 13% last year. The strongest opposition comes from artists, designers, writers, and programmers, who argue that AI weakens creativity and diminishes the value of labor.

On the other hand, the percentage of those actively using generative AI remains at 33%. However, much of this use is concentrated in areas such as research, idea generation, email writing, coding support, and prototyping, rather than in-game content creation. In other words, a significant portion of developers position AI as a helpful tool rather than an instrument for creative production.

The survey also reveals that employees in management positions use AI much more. While senior executives and business development teams are more receptive to generative AI, there is significant distrust of this technology among teams directly involved in game development. Some developers describe AI as “labor-based theft,” while others say they would even consider leaving the industry if faced with such pressure.

The resulting picture shows that AI in the gaming industry has gone beyond being just a technical tool and has become an ethical, cultural, and professional breaking point. It seems inevitable that this debate will intensify in the coming period, forcing studios to establish clear policies.
