Nex Playground Begins its European Journey from the UK
The Nex Playground is preparing to enter the game console market from a slightly different angle. It’s not easy to stand out with a new device in a field dominated by Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, but Nex’s goal doesn’t seem to be to directly enter the classic console competition. The company aims to offer a camera-based, family-friendly experience that encourages children to move while playing. Previously gaining attention in the US, the device will now be available in the UK and Ireland starting June 22nd.
Nex Playground Launches in the UK and Ireland
The Nex Playground essentially offers a motion-sensing gaming system reminiscent of the Nintendo Wii and Xbox Kinect era. Players engage in games using body movements instead of controllers. This means a more active, dynamic experience, especially for children, and transforms the living room into a playground. The box includes 5 free games as a starter pack.
The device’s main strength lies in its subscription model. The Nex Playground subscription service offers users access to over 60 games. According to UK pricing, this service will cost £45 for three months and £90 annually. The console’s retail price is £269 in the UK and €319 in Ireland. This means the device sits on a different, more family-focused price/experience line than classic consoles.
One of Nex’s strongest assets is its collaborations with well-known brands. Popular children’s favorites like Peppa Pig, Bluey, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be included in the console’s game library. Previous updates also added content themed around How to Train Your Dragon and Care Bears. These brands could make the device even more attractive, especially for younger players.
Another noteworthy aspect of the Nex Playground is its security. The device is kidSAFE+ certified, aiming to provide a platform that prioritizes children’s online safety. Of course, it’s difficult to compete on the same playing field as giants like the PS5 or Switch 2. However, the Nex Playground provides a clear answer to families’ expectation of “children playing games but also getting some exercise.” This could carve out a small but solid niche for it in the market.
