Nikita Reflects on the Ten Years of Escape from Tarkov
Officially leaving early access in November 2025, Escape from Tarkov became more than just a game; it became a summary of an era. Its creator, Nikita Buyanov, candidly discussed both the game’s nature and the personal price he paid for this challenging decade-long journey.
Escape from Tarkov Wasn’t Designed for Everyone
In his interview, Buyanov emphasizes that Escape from Tarkov was never intended to please everyone. According to him, it wasn’t designed to offer a relaxing or fun experience, but rather as a system that puts pressure on the player and pushes their limits. Therefore, the game’s harsh structure and unforgiving mechanics are the result of conscious choices.
The cheating problem that the game has struggled with for years is also seen as a result of this complexity. Buyanov says that even just making a game with such deep systems as Tarkov “playable” is a miracle in itself. The technical and design challenges faced by the development team clearly show why the process took so long.
Although more than 400 developers work under the Battlestate Games umbrella, Buyanov specifically chose to be the face of the project. Describing himself as the “tip of the spear,” the producer believes that directly attracting the players’ anger and love is the right approach for the studio. According to him, Tarkov is a social experiment where people play to relieve stress, vent their anger, and even hate the game.
Buyanov’s words also explain why Escape from Tarkov is considered a cornerstone of the extraction genre. The developer, who says he dedicated almost his entire life to this project for ten years, states that this process taught him the harsh realities of life more than it brought him happiness. While new games like ARC Raiders are built upon this foundation today, Escape from Tarkov still maintains its place at the pinnacle of the genre.
