PlayStation 5 is heading towards a jailbreak

In the early days of 2026, a striking security claim emerged regarding the PlayStation 5. This development, which quickly spread within the console modding community, brought the long-discussed possibility of jailbreaking the PS5 back into the spotlight. The claims suggest that the leakage of ROM keys, one of the console’s most critical security layers, raised serious questions about Sony’s hardware-based protection approach and focused attention on possible scenarios.

Critical Threshold in PlayStation 5 Security

The allegedly leaked ROM keys represent the lowest layer of security, activated during the PlayStation 5’s boot process and forming the foundation of the entire security chain. Because this layer is physically embedded in the processor during manufacturing, it cannot be bypassed by software updates. This makes obtaining these keys a far more critical hazard compared to previous breaches.

Previous jailbreak attempts on the PS5 generally relied on kernel-level software vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities could be quickly patched by Sony with system updates. However, if the claim regarding ROM keys is true, this could mean a permanent hardware-level security flaw, unlike temporary software vulnerabilities.

Nevertheless, experts emphasize that a scenario where everyone can jailbreak their PlayStation 5 in the short term is unrealistic. Accessing ROM keys is seen as only the first step in the process, and there are still numerous technical hurdles to overcome for a working jailbreak. Therefore, at this stage, this development is considered more of a theoretical potential.

Sony has not yet made an official statement on the matter. However, if the claims are confirmed, the company may need to produce new hardware revisions to completely close this vulnerability. Considering that there are tens of millions of PlayStation 5s on the market, this situation is seen as a very challenging process for Sony.
