PlayStation 6 will Use AI, Ray Tracing, and VFI for 4K 120 FPS

Notable leaks have surfaced regarding Sony’s next-generation console, the PlayStation 6. Allegedly, the company will focus more on software-based technologies to create a perception of higher performance while keeping hardware costs under control. Accordingly, the PlayStation 6 could utilize AI-powered solutions, ray tracing, and image enhancement systems for a 4K 120 FPS gaming experience.

PlayStation 6 to Focus on AI-Powered Performance

According to the leaks, the PlayStation 6 will combine VFI, PSSR, ray tracing, and native AI models under the same performance goal. VFI adds artificial interframes between real frames to make the image appear smoother. This system works with a logic similar to the frame rendering technologies that have long been used on PCs.

It is suggested that Sony wants to use this technology in conjunction with its own resolution upscaling system, PSSR. This would allow the console to upscale the image to a higher quality using software support, instead of naturally producing every frame in 4K resolution. This approach could make the 4K 120 FPS target for the PlayStation 6 more achievable.

AI is also expected to play a significant role in ray tracing. Realistic lighting and reflection effects still place a heavy burden on consoles. Allegedly, Sony plans to use a locally running AI model to reduce this burden. However, it is stated that such a model could consume between 4 GB and 8 GB of memory.

The target release date for the PlayStation 6 is not yet finalized, but leaks point to a possible 2027 release. Sony’s main goal seems to be to keep the console price under $1,000 while offering a powerful experience through software tricks. However, how realistic the 4K 120 FPS promise will be will only become clear when official hardware details are revealed.
