Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been cancelled
The years of uncertainty surrounding Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake have come to an end. Ubisoft announced that it has halted development of the game as part of a major company-wide restructuring. This decision is part of a broader wave of cancellations encompassing five games in total, including three new IPs and a mobile game.
Ubisoft Restructures, Sands of Time Dream Ends
In a statement, Ubisoft cited “a more selective portfolio approach and elevated quality criteria across the group” as the primary reasons for the cancellations. The company clearly emphasized its desire to focus on fewer but stronger projects in this new era, stating that it would not be possible to continue development on titles that did not align with this goal.
As part of its restructuring process, Ubisoft established five separate “creative houses.” The first, Vantage Studios, will manage the company’s biggest brands, such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. The other four structures will be responsible for series like The Division, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and Rayman. This new organizational model aims to provide a clearer direction for Ubisoft’s future projects.
The cancellation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is particularly noteworthy when considering the game’s history. Announced in 2020, the remake was first delayed to January 2021, then to March 2021, and finally suspended indefinitely. With development moving to Ubisoft Montreal, the project was completely reworked; a more realistic visual style, new animations, and revamped combat and parkour mechanics were planned. Despite this, the development team admitted that the desired level of quality was not achieved.
Ubisoft also emphasized that this decision does not mean the Prince of Persia brand has been completely shelved. The statement said, “The Prince of Persia universe and legacy are still very important to us,” and stressed that this cancellation should not be interpreted as abandoning the series. However, it seems that Sands of Time Remake has now gone down in history as one of the projects that no longer fits into Ubisoft’s new strategy.
