Resident Evil Requiem Could Be the Most Emotional Game in the Series

New statements from Capcom have significantly raised expectations for Resident Evil Requiem. Koshi Nakanishi, who previously directed Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, says Requiem will be the Resident Evil game with the widest “emotional range” to date. In the recently released special presentation, both gameplay details and the tone of the story became clear, and it’s evident that Requiem consciously strikes a balance between classic horror and intense action.

Resident Evil Requiem Balances Leon and Grace

One of the most striking aspects of Resident Evil Requiem is its structure, which unfolds through two different main characters. Sections played with Grace focus on a purer survival horror, while scenes controlled by Leon offer an action-heavy tempo. According to Nakanishi, the main reason for this is that Leon is no longer a character who shies away from fear. Still an active DSO agent after Resident Evil 6, Leon is an experienced figure who doesn’t falter in the face of simple threats.

Therefore, Leon’s levels feature more aggressive combat and refined weapon handling, reminiscent of Resident Evil 4 in tone. However, the director specifically emphasizes that Requiem will push Leon to his “limits,” both emotionally and physically. So, it’s clear things won’t be easy for Leon this time either.

Not only the main characters, but also the enemy designs in Requiem are unconventional. In the game, zombies partially retain the habits they had while alive. In one example shown at the presentation, a zombie who was a cleaner before transforming is still seen wiping things down. This detail aims to create an atmosphere that is both disturbing and strangely melancholic.

According to Nakanishi, players will experience a significant “sense of relief and release” as they transition from Grace’s intense moments of fear to Leon’s more powerful action sequences. These transitions stand out as one of the key building blocks that enhance Requiem’s emotional impact.

Resident Evil Requiem will be released on February 27th for PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S. According to Capcom, this season’s series will not only aim to scare but also to emotionally traumatize the player.
