Sony’s Striking Message Regarding PlayStation 6 Pricing
Sony CEO Hideaki Nishino made statements about hardware pricing during the company’s latest investor Q&A session. Nishino stated that they view PlayStation hardware as the core platform providing gamers with a gaming experience, and that they closely monitor market conditions regarding pricing.
The CEO’s most notable statement was that the company does not plan to sell its hardware at a significant loss. Nishino said it’s unrealistic for Sony to bear the entire burden of rising component costs. He added that despite price increases in some regions outside of Japan, sales are continuing as planned and this hasn’t negatively impacted player demand. He also emphasized that Sony is trying to best communicate the value of its products to gamers through their pricing.
This statement comes after recent rumors that the PlayStation 6’s production cost has reached approximately $960. However, this figure is only an unconfirmed claim regarding production costs. Production costs do not directly determine the console’s selling price, and Sony has not yet shared any official information about the price of the next-generation console.
In the past, PlayStation consoles were often sold at a loss to reach more users, with the company covering the difference through game and service revenue. However, there are talks that this strategy may change due to rising hardware costs. Rumors that the PlayStation 6 will be released in 2027 are also not yet official.
