Star Citizen Achieves a First in Alpha Phase

Star Citizen, which has been under development for many years in alpha stages, has reached a historic milestone in terms of numbers, despite being at the center of controversy in the gaming world. According to publicly available crowdfunding data, the game has raised approximately $928 million in funding as of December 2025. This makes Star Citizen the first game to approach $1 billion in funding while still in development.

Star Citizen Reaches Record Funding Level in Alpha Stage

Behind this success lies the unconventional financing model implemented by developer Cloud Imperium Games. Instead of classic publisher support, Star Citizen is funded through voluntary player donations, early access packages, and in-game purchases. Players can purchase relatively affordable starter packs to enter the game, while also investing in virtual spaceships worth thousands of dollars.

These virtual ships, in particular, play a key role in the project’s financial growth. Some high-end ship bundles sold through the Pledge Store exceed $1,500, and even more expensive limited-edition bundles have been offered in the past. These ships are sold directly by the developer and are not based on random loot systems or player-to-player trading.

2025 proved to be a record year for the project. Raising over $150 million in funding that year alone clearly demonstrates that interest hasn’t waned. On the contrary, player spending continues unabated despite the full release date still being uncertain. This makes Star Citizen the most expensive video game ever developed.

While other major games have achieved billion-dollar revenues after launch, Star Citizen’s difference is that it’s approaching this level entirely during its alpha phase. If the current trend continues, the project is expected to surpass the $1 billion mark in 2026. According to developer statements, a full release is unlikely before 2027 or 2028. Despite this, Star Citizen has already achieved a first that will go down in gaming history.
